Gardenfire Project: A Backyard Built for Gathering

Every project begins with a vision. For the Gardenfire Project, that vision was bold: transform an underused backyard into a true entertaining utopia. The homeowners dreamed of a gourmet outdoor kitchen, a fireplace as the heart of the space, lush plantings to frame the setting, and, if possible, a pool for hot summer days.

Bringing that dream to life required a team that could balance creativity with precision. Landscape architect Ed Tessier worked closely with Omni TN, the builder, to navigate both the opportunities and obstacles of the site. That collaboration was key. The homeowners had experienced disconnects between architects and builders on past projects, so having a builder who already shared a successful history with Ed created alignment from the start.

Turning Challenges Into Opportunities

The rear yard was compact, intersected by a driveway, and presented an unexpected discovery: a sewer line running diagonally through the space. These constraints required rethinking the program. Ultimately, the decision was made to forego the pool, which opened the door to maximizing every other element on the wish list.

The result is a carefully layered design that makes the most of every square foot. The front yard now offers striking curb appeal—so striking, in fact, that passersby regularly stop to take photos. The backyard is the true centerpiece, with a custom outdoor kitchen, integrated entertaining zones, and a fireplace that anchors the space year-round.

Where Design Meets Daily Life

While the design itself is striking, it’s how the space functions that defines its success. In the fall, the outdoor kitchen becomes the hub for cooking meals, gathering friends around the fire, and watching college football on cool evenings. The backyard has already proven itself as the perfect setting for large parties, while still providing a sense of intimacy when it’s just family at home.

The Gardenfire Project is a reminder that even with site challenges, thoughtful design and strong collaboration can turn limitations into opportunities. Today, what was once a backyard “wasteland” has become a warm, inviting retreat. One that reflects both the homeowners’ lifestyle and the artistry of the team who brought it to life.

Every outdoor space tells a story, and the Gardenfire Project proves that even the most challenging sites can be transformed into something extraordinary.
